Withania + Rhodiola

Withania and Rhodiola extracts act synergistically with a restorative effect, promote stress adaptation (tonic-adaptogenic) and support mental well-being and the body's natural defences.

Thanks to the effective synergy of action of two plants with a strengthening/reconstituting and balancing/relaxing action, this product is particularly useful in cases of physical and mental fatigue and in states of mental and physical stress.

Adaptogenic plants do not correspond to any classic pharmacological category nor to any synthetic drug, as they act on different organs and/or districts, causing an overall adaptogenic response. This is due to the synergy of active ingredients of different natures present in the plant.

Active principles

Whitania Somnifera, also known as Ashwaganda, Indian Ginseng and Winter cherry, is an herbaceous, woody shrub at the base that can reach a height of 170 cm, with greenish-yellow flowers and orange-yellow to red fruits depending on ripeness, belonging to the Solanaceae family from India, South Africa, East Asia and the Mediterranean basin. The leaves, stem and root are used.

Withania/Ashwaganda has been an important remedy in Ayurvedic medicine for more than 3000 years where it has been used as an aphrodisiac, liver tonic, anti-inflammatory and more recently in the treatment of bronchitis, asthma, insomnia and dementia. Withania's pharmacological activity is mainly attributed to the alkaloids Witanolides and Witaferin. Witanolides exert an inhibition of stress-induced regulation of dopaminergic receptors in the corpus striatum. They also have an immunostimulating effect related to their ability to induce nitrous oxide synthesis by macrophages.

Witanolides also appear to be responsible for Withania's ability to moderate pain and improve joint mobility via a hormone-type mechanism. Witaferin appears to have marked anti-angiogenic and anti-proliferative properties. Withania's active ingredients appear to have anticonvulsant properties through an interactivity with the barbiturate GABA-ergic receptor site.

Withania also improves cognitive and psychomotor performance in both healthy and ill subjects. Furthermore, benefits were observed in the treatment of stress and stress-related neuropsychiatric disorders such as anxiety, depression and insomnia. Finally, an eight-week study in which a Withania extract titrated to 1.5% Witanolide (600 mg/day) was administered to healthy subjects aged between 40 and 70 demonstrated an increase in salivary testosterone and DHEA-S levels while oestradiol and cortisol levels remained unchanged.

Withania has effective activity in combating physical and mental fatigue (tonic-adaptogenic activity) caused by various causes, and facilitates and promotes relaxation and mental well-being. Withania also effectively supports the body's natural defences. It is suitable for recovery from psycho-physical stress situations such as surmenage, physical fatigue, performance stress, convalescence, longcovids and their consequences.

Withania, according to various committees dealing with pharmacological research, is one of the ten most interesting plants for scientific research.

Interactions: possible interactions with psychoactive drugs have not yet been investigated.

Rhodiola Rosea, also known as Golden Root or Arctic Root, is a succulent plant belonging to the Crassulaceae family that is widespread in the northern part of the northern hemisphere at an altitude between 900 and 3000 metres and flowers from June to August. The epithet 'rose' is due to the scent it emanates.

The active ingredients present in the root are species-specific phenolic glycosides, organic acids, flavonoids, catechins, proanthocyanidins.Of the many active ingredients, Salidroside and Para-tyrosol are particularly interesting for their activities.

The pharmacokinetics of Rhodiola are based on the metabolic fate of its active ingredient Salidroside, which, being water-soluble, shows rapid oral absorption and renal elimination. The bioavailability of Salidroside can be as high as 98%. Salidroside and Para-tyrosol influence the levels and activity of monoamines (dopamine, adrenalin, norepinephrine, serotonin) by inhibiting the enzyme responsible for their degradation. The result is an improvement in metabolic activities and cognitive functions: anti-fatigue, anti-stress, anti-depressant effect, improved memory and concentration). The active ingredients themselves appear to promote the synthesis of opioid peptides (beta-endorphins) .

Rhodiola extract also acts by providing specific resistance to physical and biological stress by acting on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenergic axis and various mediators of the stress response. Long-term chronic stress can lead to symptoms such as anxiety, depression, fatigue, sleep problems, immune system problems and finally cardiological and metabolic problems.

Experimental tests on various types of stress (e.g. heat stress and others) show that Rhodiola extract increases resistance to stressful stimulation and decreases recovery time. Recovery time also decreases in the case of stress related to prolonged motor activity. More and more experimental data show a link between ageing and resistance to stress (recognised as a possible contributory cause of cancer).

With this in mind, Rhodiola's unique properties are increasingly being investigated in the anti-ageing and cancer prevention fields.

Rhodiola appears to be able, among other things, to inhibit the growth of Ehrlich's adenocarcinoma and Pliss' lymphosarcoma cells and decrease liver metastases.
